Pages

This is a site for all artists and art enthusiasts. Here I will share info on artbooks of all kinds including the art of movie books, art instruction, art philosophy, comic books, compilations, specific artists, and more. I will be giving a quick review on the book, perhaps an image or two, and some links to the artists and where you can purchase them.

I feel that it's necessary for an artist to build a visual vocabulary to look at other artists work as well as study their craft. That said, I hope you find this site helpful in your art endeavors.

Cheers!

P.S.
Sorry for the crappy photos. You'll just have to live with it. I do...

Shoutout to Animebooks.com

This is an awesome site to find rare books that you can't easily find in the bookstore or at amazon. It has a great selection of art books from your favorite anime. But that's not all! They also have plenty of books from french and american artists such as Alessandro Barbucci and Dean Yeagle respectively.

They send you $5.00 off coupons for certain purchases and are very friendly. I get little hand-written notes on my receipts saying things like "great choice!" or "I also reccomend this...", because I like to be congratulated and rewarded for my consumerism.

Claire Wendling drawers 2.0

I honestly have never heard of Claire Wendling until I saw a post about her on the blog of one of Sky Dolls' creators, Barbara Canepa. Apparently she is a veteran French comic artist and illustrator very popular in the French art world working on comics to animation.

This book features sketches, comic art, illustrations, character designs and background designs for animated films, and more. She has beautiful sketches with elegant lines and powerful illustrations. Wendling has a variety of styles that you don't see in most artists. A great book to add to your collection.

The Art of Kung Fu Panda

This is one of my favorite "Art of..."-books because it has tons of colored sketches of character designs. If you aspire to be a character designer or just love pretty pictures, this book is a must have.

Most of the artwork featured is that of character designer Nicolas Marlet. I love his technique here where he uses a colored pencil to sketch out his gesture, pencil in the finished lines, and finishes it off with marker and paint; sometimes on toned paper. Marlet has a knack for silhouette and gesture, which in my humble opinion, is a powerful combination for a character designer or animator.

If you loved the movie, you'll love the book. It even has sketches of characters that didn't make it in the film.

Street Sketch Book

This is the best book on street art I've ever seen. It has numerous artists with an array of different styles. It gives you a little bio on every artist and each page has tons of images of inspiring work. The artwork in this book is just crazy. These artists have imaginations like no other combining the figurative with the abstract. I feel inspired to draw every time I look at it.

Mostly the book features sketch work (if you didn't get that from the title), which I feel can be an artist's greatest work because it shows the raw unadulterated ideas of the individual. You can really feel the energy in these sketches and the playfulness of each artist exploring their worlds.

I feel inspired to draw every time I look at it.

Alphonse Mucha

Mucha is arguably one of the most influential artists of our generation. Many artists have a list of favorite artists, and many will have Mucha on their list.

First off, this book is thick. It gives a brief history on Mucha if one cares to read it. It's jam-packed with so many images you might read the text the 10th time around. Many know Mucha for his prints, but inside are photos of intricate sculptures, jewelry, and most importantly sketches.

With sketches, you can see the initial thought and energy that went in to the piece. And this book has plenty of beautiful sketches from prints to dinnerware. With 355 pages of awesomeness, I recommend this book to any artist.
